The Hare crouches in a 'form', her daytime resting place, from where she can keep watch, ready to run if danger threatens. Up on the field another Hare watches from amongst the young Green corn. As Rooks and Crows prepare to nest in the trees at the top of the hill, they keep a careful eye on the Hare resting amongst the Daisies - the 'Day's eyes', which open with the sun and close at night.
the classical Greeks first said Hares sleep with their eyes open, and the belief was enshrined in folklore.
