Handfasting is an ancient name for the ceremony of binding a couple together, a Celtic or Pagan wedding. In this rite, the pair may perform several symbolic actions, jumping a broom together to denote shared domestic life, offering to one another and consuming food and drink, representing the mutual nourishment and support they will share (often honey cake and mead, made by the industry of bees, which themselves symbolise the hard work required to survive and prosper.) The highlight of the ceremony is the binding of hands the 'Handfasting' which shows all present that the two people are now both symbolically and legally bound together as a married couple. The cord, which may have been made by the couple prior to the ceremony is placed around their clasped hands and tied in a knot. Here Ivy, meaning binding and violets meaning 'fidelity' are entwined into the cord, onto which holed stones are tied, denoting the building of a life together and the earth upon which the couple will live.
